Driver who left scene of injury accident pleads guilty

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — A man who ran a red light and left the scene of a wreck that seriously injured a passenger in another vehicle has made a plea deal for a suspended sentence.

Alston Mayo is sentenced in 89th district court to a three-year suspended sentence and a $1,000 fine in connection to the March 13, 2021 wreck. He was arrested in April 2022 on an arrest warrant issued in 2021 after police identified his truck with dash cam video from the other vehicle.

Authorities said one victim suffered injuries that resulted in months of physical therapy and lost work. The crash happened at Southwest Parkway and Professional Drive. A victim and a witness said a pickup ran a red light and hit the other vehicle on the driver's side, spinning it around, and then the other driver left the scene.

Police said the other vehicle was totaled. Passing motorists stopped to help a victim of the collision. Police said that a dash cam video showed the victim's vehicle going into the intersection with a green light, colliding with a red and white older model Ford pickup, and spinning the victim's vehicle around in front of the pickup.

After viewing the video, police found a red and white Ford pickup that same night in the 4500 block of Old Jacksboro Highway with a flat front tire and damage to the left front side of the pickup. Police later had a witness of the crash look at a photo lineup, and the witness identified Mayo as the driver.
