2024 NEXSTAR SPORTS AWARDS: Full list of nominees

The Texoma Sports Hall of Fame was founded along with the annual Nexstar Sports Awards in 2019, honoring local legends who left their mark on Texoma athletics and enshrining them among the most talented athletes Texoma has ever seen.

Each year during the Nexstar Sports Awards, several athletes who called Texoma home are added to the Nexstar Sports Hall of Fame. In 2024, four individuals and the first-ever team were inducted into the Nexstar Sports Hall of Fame.

2024 Inductee — 1964 Archer City Wildcats

So many outstanding players have competed in Texoma over the years, and as great as many have been, not everyone has the stats or the post-high-school prowess to secure a place in the Texoma Sports Hall of Fame on their own.

They may not be individual members of the Texoma Sports Hall of Fame, but when the group of men that made up the Archer City Wildcats football team in 1964 came together, they created something so special, that it's worthy of a place in the Texoma Sports Hall of Fame.

In 1962, the Archer City Wildcats won just three games. In 1963, they won seven.

Then in 1964, with hopes of competing for a District Championship, the team began their season by losing two of their first three games, including a 41-0 beatdown by Olney, before reeling off twelve straight wins on their way to the Class A State Championship.

Underdogs in every playoff matchup, the Wildcats beat Keller, then Goldthwaite, then Clifton.

In the State Semifinals, after scoring their lone touchdown, Big Lake successfully kicked an extra point to tie the game up. However, after the Wildcats were flagged for being offsides, they decided to instead go for the two-point conversion.

On the ensuing play, the Owls star fullback was stopped just short of the goal line. Archer City defeated Big Lake 7-6 in one of the biggest upsets in Texas High School Playoff history.

That unbelievable win was eclipsed the following week when the Wildcats upset the highly touted and heavily favored Ingleside Mustangs 13-6 in Austin for the Class A State Title.

In the sixty years since then, no Archer City Wildcat team has won a state football title.

How remarkable was their 1964 Cinderella season?

When the final Harris Poll results were posted that year, the Wildcats were ranked 7th in the state in Class 1A even though they'd won the state championship.
